1) Mur Lafferty’s PLAYING FOR KEEPS debuts on Amazon today, so now’s your time to get a copy. You may remember JR and I doing artwork for the podiobooks version awhile back, which I think speaks for itself as to the quality of this work.

Go on, buy a copy if you haven’t already. You won’t regret it.

2) Voice of Free Planet X has just gone video:
The Voice of Free Planet X, Episode 158: Gimmie Shelter from Jared Axelrod on Vimeo. This episode explores the experimental zombie-apocalypse role-playing game “Shelter In Place.” The game’s creator, J.R. Blackwell, is interviewed along with footage of the very first round of this scary, cinematic game.Watch it, and let me know what you think3) In addition to the Aliens You Will Meet LIVE show (Sat 05:30 pm at Rockdale) and the “Long and the Short of It” panel (Sun 04:00 pm at Manila / Singapore / Hong Kong) I’m also doing a reading on Saturday at 11:30 am in the Williams roomWhich is pretty awesome.

Trouble is, I have no idea what to read. “Grayson Boys?” “Even In Arcadia?” “Amelia Effective, Young Girl Detective?” Bits from “Way of the Dodo?”Any requests?

The drama’s been intensifying over at Playing For Keeps, which means more dramatic covers for me to draw. I haven’t been giving J.C. Hutchins proper credit for the relentlessly amazing work he’s been doing with the titles and taglines he’s put together for these covers. The stuff he did for #7 is so cool, I may have to print it out and frame it.

Keeping Up With PLAYING FOR KEEPS

The main irony of blogging is that if you’re busy doing things, you don’t have time to write about them on your website. Which is too bad, really. The past 3 PDF covers for Playing For Keeps have been some of my best work:

Mur and I are also auctioning off the original art of #1 for Child’s Play. 100% of all the money goes directly to the charity, which, to be honest, gives me a wonderful little halo feeling. Four hours into the auction, it had topped $100, which has effectively added a pair of wings and a harp.

Let me repeat that. The artwork is currently going for over $100.

That’s over 62 lbs of pennies. $100 was my “ridiculous number” that I suggested setting the “Buy It Now” option at. And now look.

Still got 6 days to go, but even if it doesn’t increase, I’ll peg this one as a success.

Jack In The Box

New Playing For Keeps chapter came out yesterday, which means a new PDF ready for download, which means new art. Mur’s character Clever Jack was to be the focus, and he’s a great character to draw. His logo, which you can see on his sleeve there, is my favorite of the series so far–so much so, I’ve already ordered the shirt. Mur wanted something that didn’t look like a traditional hero logo, and I think that was pulled off. Plus, shoulder logos look cool. That’s just science.

Terror From Above!

The first episode of Mur Lafferty’s podiobook PLAYING FOR KEEPS is now available for download. Go download it if you like good things, like superheroes and heroines with no patience for superheroics.

Mur’s also making a PDF of each audio chapter available, which is one of those ideas that is so awesome that I’m surprised no one’s done it before. Are we entering a new era of the Victorian chapbook? If we are, I can’t think of better novel to start us out on that road. This may be something I have to stea–uh, borrow, Mur.

You may notice, as you’re about to dig into said PDF, that it features a lovely comic-style cover by yours truly, with beautiful graphic accents by JC Hutchins and Natalie Metzger. It looks something like the image below, only bigger, brighter, and more capable of giving you joy. Click on the link below to download your own copy.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Posted by Jared | Posted in Playing For Keeps, podcasts | Posted on 30-10-2007

Been doing some artwork for Mur Lafferty’s new podiobook Playing For Keeps; superhero logos, comic book covers, visual elements of the rich world Mur has created. It’s been a lot of fun. Not only has it been a chance to work with Mur and J.C. Hutchins (not to mention my wife-to-be, J.R. Blackwell, who made a super-awesome cover for the project), but also an opportunity to do something different with podcasting, as you’ll see when the story starts rolling November first.

To whet your appetite, Mur has already put up some art on the Playing For Keeps site, including two of my superhero logos, and J.R.’s excellent cover to use as icon. But the star is obliviously the first shirt of the PFK series, official merchandise of the bar where Our Heroes spend their off-hours:

Keepsie's Bar T-shirt

Which you can purchase from those fine folks at Geeklabel for less than $20. Imagine how much that would cost you Keepsie’s Bar was a real place? And the best part is there’s no 2-drink minimum a Geeklabel.

This is the first artwork I did for the project, so it’s incredibly exciting to see it.
