On Being The Troll King

On Saturday, I got all dressed up and was the King of the Trolls.

The Troll King

The Troll King is a character I’ve played before, most notably on the cover of Project M.A.G.I, a campaign frame for the game Mortal Coil. Whenever my talented wife J.R. Blackwell gets a fantasy photo gig, I waste no time suggesting that this might be a good time to bring in the Troll King. So, when she was hired to take photographs for Josh Jordan’s upcoming game HEROINE, casting about for fantastical characters to evoke the Alice In Wonderland/Wizard of Oz/Labrynth/Chronicles of Narnia concept the game is about, I knew this was a perfect time for the Troll King to return.

Taking inspiration from Doug Mahnke & Grant Morrison’s re-imagining of Frankenstien’s monster, I made a sweet new vest–seriously, that pattern is about to be used over and over–selected the largest sword I owned, added my voluminous wedding coat, and finished the look with a pair of fangs I haven’t worn in ages. With the superb make-up skills of Bunny Greene giving the face prosthetic the care and attention it finally deserved,  as well as painting the rest of my face to match, the Troll King was complete and ready to roll down to Eastern State Penitentiary for one of the most jaw-dropping photoshoots I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of

My wife is an incredibly talented person, and it always a pleasure to collaborate with her. The results are always mind-blowing.

  1. Wow. I saw the second picture on JR’s blog. But these really are amazing. Wonderful work, by both models and JR. :)

  2. Excellent! This rocks all kinds of ways!

While I’m here, where did you purchase/obtain the vest pattern or what is the brand/number? It does indeed look like a must-have.
