Jared Axelrod

... is an author, an illustrator, a graphic designer, a sculptor, a costume designer, a podcaster and quite a few other things that he's lost track of but will no doubt remember when the situation calls for it. He is a founding member of the daily flash-fiction website 365 TOMORROWS, and the writer and producer of two science-fiction podcasts, "The Voice Of Free Planet X" and the serial "Aliens You Will Meet." He is not domestic, he is a luxury, and in that sense, necessary.

A Wonderful Winter’s Masque

Today's Style

As is our custom, J.R. and I held a Halloween party in February. Unlike last year, which was a spooky dinner party, we decided to invite more people and keep the prep and costuming to a minimum. “Let’s tone it down this year,” I said.  Which did not stop some of our friends from pulling out all the stops. Because they are awesome.

For my part, I sadly found that the antlers I had purchased were far too heavy for the mask design I had planned, and I spent the majority of the party unmasked. Next year, will I finally create the horned visage I envisioned? It remains to be seen….

Killer Spread

Instead of serving a Roast Beast, I contented myself by creating a variety of dips to go with a variety of chips and crackers. The dips are as follows:

  • Nacho Cheese
  • Hummus
  • Salsa
  • Nutella
  • Fromage Fort
  • French Onion
  • Guacamole
  • The Triple Trafe Special: Crab, Bacon & Cheese

I realize to some creating a mask with real deer antlers and serving 8 separate dips doesn’t fit a definition of “toning it down.” But those people have never been to our parties.

As I mentioned previously, it was at the Winter’s Masque that we informed our friends of the expectant addition of the Axelrod clan. This added an extra element of celebration to the proceedings, making a joyful occasion even more ebullient.

All in all, a delightful time. I’m already scheming for next year.
