Fables of the Flying City, Episode 8 “A Bitter Brew”

Scene: The provost’s office, at the top of the Provost’s Tower

Characters involved: Provost Kitchener, Vice Provost Elderheim

References:   The Vrussian Empire is, as you might have guessed, inspired by the Prussian Empire. I imagine the flag of Vrussia looks a lot like the flag of Prussia. A “boffin” is a essentially an “egghead” in British slang. Here, though, Boffins is a butler. Though he shares the same name, Provost Kitchener is not Lord Kitchener.

Notes: The Vrussian Empire get it’s first proper mention, in this dialogue between the two most powerful people in Amperstam. The Vrussains are almost boogeymen here, reminders that there is a world below, and that it could rise up, at any moment.

The star of the episode is Margoh Elderheim, the Vice-Provost. She is a character we see little of in this story, but she becomes an increasingly noteworthy presence in the next story, and major player in the graphic novel. Here, she is an idealist, stymied by Kitchener’s practicality. In a way, her arc is just as interesting as Ashe’s. But Ashe get’s to fly around, so we follow her, instead.
